This is something I’ve been wanting to write for some time. I just wanted to express my experiences with not only a new child being a gamer but how it also it affected the website here as well. As a note, the ‘v.10’ represents 10 months, how old my son Grayson is, for example if he’s 1 year and 4 months it will become v1.4.
It all started in January of 2015, we found out that the wife and I were having a baby. We instantly knew our lives were going to change, waves of excitement and stress came over and over through out the pregnancy. Excitement was definitely one of the best emotions that I felt and the strongest. There was that time where I thought about my personal life and gaming life, but honestly I was more worried about the health of my wife and this new baby. That was probably the most stressful part. Like most people we waited a little bit after we knew about the baby before we announced it to our family and friends. Bless my wife for allowing me to do the announcement, and of course in true Jason fashion…I decided to announce it on April 1st. Yes, on April fools I dropped this gem:
We had many family and friends lose their shit over this. I couldn’t stop laughing at the comments, even half way through the day when I posted an ultrasound people still didn’t believe it. On April 2nd I had to post, “It’s April 2nd, and this is still true” before people would actually believe it, twas a glorious day.
From that day on it became very real.
Time was flying by, just trying to keep up with my wife, making sure she’s ok and healthy wasn’t to hard but I made sure I was always around to help, hell I didn’t know what to expect and neither did she. During the pregnancy I did have some time to play some games. I really enjoy the game DOTA 2. It just caught me more than League of Legends and Smite at the time. The problem is that each match is an average of 45 minutes. (Hell I had a match go an hour a half one time!!) So I was very limited to playing just at night. That in turn caused me to be extremely tired as my nights became longer. Another game I enjoyed was NHL 16 on the PS4. Games were quick, maybe 30 minutes-ish or less to play. I created a defenseman named after my son that I played in Be a Pro mode. It was a blast and I had a good time with it. I tried to keep my free time about my wife and unborn son as much as I could.
Fast forward to now. Grayson just turned 11 months. Its taken me six months to write this article (and he was 10 months old when I created the graphic), and I apologize. Its been a hell of a year. Sleepless nights and working all day. Moving with a new child was a major challenge. Both my wife and I got new jobs. Needless to say, its been bat-shit crazy. Gaming has just about been non-existent. I’ll sneak in a game here and there but I don’t have the time to invest into DOTA any more. An hour of free time is golden, and usually spent with me building Ikea furniture or child proofing something. Grayson really doesn’t sleep too much and sometimes they are just power naps so I really don’t want to start something then have to stop within 20 minutes. Or trying to stay up late thinking you’re going to sneak a game in, then wake up realizing that you’re still at the title screen and you fell asleep as soon as the load screen started…over an hour ago. One of the things I feel bad about is GameOctane. It also had to be put on the major back burner since Grayson was born. It has been a major challenge continuing pushing forward, trying to generate content for everyone. But we have. The team we have now are busting their ass and taking their free time to get you want you guys want. Hell we got accepted into E3 this year. So thank you for reading and hanging out with us. It means a lot, more than you can imagine. Your support drives us to put ourselves our there, again I thank you all.
But even though I haven’t been able to play as much, or dedicate as much time as I’d like to GameOctane, or invest into other avenues for us…
I wouldn’t change it for anything. Grayson’s first year has been a blast and I can’t wait to see him grow. On a positive note..he knows what the joysticks do on game controllers!! Haha, I’ll leave off there.
Until next time my friends!
