In a Xbox Wire post, Phil Spencer (Head of Xbox), announced a brand new service coming in Spring 2017. Xbox Game Pass is a monthly subscription service that gives you unlimited access to over 100 games for the monthly fee of $9.99. The games on Xbox Game Pass will include Xbox One and Backwards Compatible Xbox 360 games.
In the post, Phil announced some of the developers that will have titles as a part of this program, including 2K, 505 Games, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, Capcom, Codemasters, Deep Silver, Focus Home Interactive, SEGA, SNK CORPORATION, THQ Nordic GmbH, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios. While the complete library has not been announced, Phil mentioned a few games that will be available as part of the service, which are Halo 5, Soul Calibur 2, Payday 2, and NBA 2K16. Other games that were announced in a press release include Saints Row IV Re-Elected, Mad Max, LEGO Batman, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Terraria, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Fable III, and Tekken Tag 2.
I know what some of you are thinking – Sony already did this with the Playstation Now program. Keep in mind that Xbox Game Pass is a little different. First, the cost is less than Playstation Now. Second, you will have the ability to completely download games, so you don’t have to worry about bandwith or connectivity issues. Third, you will have the opportunity to buy the games at a discount if you are subscribed to the service. Phil also mentioned that games will be cycled in and out in order to keep the library fresh. Xbox Gold Members will get first access to the program before it is launched to the broader community.
Some of you will not have to wait for spring in order to access Xbox Game Pass. Starting today, Xbox Insiders who are a part of the Alpha Insider Ring will have access to the service. Keep in mind that there will only be a few titles available for Insiders and there may be bugs. Feedback is critical, so if you are an Alpha Insider and see bugs, make sure to report them! If you are an Insider, reboot your Xbox to see if the update is available.
By now, you all know I like Xbox, so I am really excited for this. I love gaming, but I have missed many titles in the pass few years due to money constraints. For $10 a month, I can finally play some games that I have missed like Halo 5 and Mad Max. The ability to download the games is also a plus. And before any fanboys get on my case about it, Xbox Community Manager Josh Stein said it best in a tweet this morning –
This service is not for everyone, but having the choice is important to me as a gamer. I love that both Xbox and Playstation have options like this for gamers.
