In all my years of gaming, I can’t recall a news announcement that has been this huge. Today, Xbox announced the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, which is the parent company of Bethesda Softworks. As you may or may not know, Bethesda Softworks is home to Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. Xbox will potentially be the exclusive home for Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonered, Prey, Quake, Starfield, and many other franchises. I explain why I said potentially in a bit.
In a post on Xbox News Wire, Phil Spencer (Head of Xbox), said the following – “Just as they took the bold first steps to bring The Elder Scrolls franchise to the original Xbox, Bethesda were early supporters of Xbox Game Pass, bringing their games to new audiences across devices and have been actively investing in new gaming technology like cloud streaming of games. We will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC. One of the things that has me most excited is seeing the roadmap with Bethesda’s future games, some announced and many unannounced, to Xbox console and PC including Starfield, the highly anticipated, new space epic currently in development by Bethesda Game Studios.
Like us, Bethesda are passionate believers in building a diverse array of creative experiences, in exploring new game franchises, and in telling stories in bold ways. All of their great work will of course continue and grow and we look forward to empowering them with the resources and support of Microsoft to scale their creative visions to more players in new ways for you.”
Now there are a TON of questions still being discussed, especially since the acquisition most likely won’t be complete until 2021. Phil even mentions that there will be a case by case decision on which games will be Xbox/PC exclusive. That most likely means Deathloop and Ghostwire will still be timed PS5 exclusive. But what about the other franchises? As a fan, you would hope they would keep some of the major franchises exclusive like Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Or will it be like Minecraft where it is available everywhere and they can make more money? And, more importantly, WILL THEY TEAM WITH OBSIDIAN FOR FALLOUT NEW VEGAS 2?????????
One thing can be guaranteed – Bethesda games will launch day one on Game Pass. And that right there makes Game Pass a must buy. This is incredible news and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Xbox.
Let us know what you think of the acquisition in the comments!
