Adult Swim is a well known entity when it comes to cartoons or content that is funny and adult themed. It should be no surprise that Adult Swim are publishing games that are the same way. At first glance, one of the published games, Rise & Shine, looks like a beautifully animated. The minute you start playing, however, things steer towards the adult themes as you violently survive in the world of Gamearth.
Gamearth was once a peaceful planet now until the citizens were threatened by the warmongering Space grunts of Nexgen. As the story starts, you see the devastation and death that the Grunts left in their path. You play as Rise, a small child who happens to find a legendary living weapon called Shine. The way you get the gun is very fitting for this adult themed game. It wasn’t found on some quest, but given to you by the previous owner as he lay dying after a fight. And his death is not pretty. The game is Mature rated, so expect plenty of blood and destruction throughout your playthrough.
With Shine at your side, you side scroll through many levels of enemies and bosses, solving puzzles along the way. I felt that the puzzles were pretty innovative. Shine’s upgrades will help you along the way, but sometimes you will need to look outside the box to get through a level. For example (as you can see in the video below), you may need to use your best Dodgeball skills (Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive, and Dodge) in order to avoid enemies and use their firepower to take out obstacles. In Rise & Shine, you won’t have multiple options to get past certain areas. You will need a specific upgrade or movement in order to get through.
And that is probably the biggest knock on this game. You don’t have a lot of options, and the options that are available are very challenging to pull off. The game controls like Metal Slug, where you use the joystick to aim all over the screen to shoot enemies. The aim controls are not very responsive, so a gamer with slow reflexes may not hit enemies in time or hit the wrong thing, causing a horrible death. Expect to die a lot in Rise & Shine. At first, it was comical how violently you die. But as time goes on, it can get very frustrating. The difficulty of this game is very high, so don’t expect to breeze through levels. You need to be careful, precise with your timing, and use all available resources to dodge and hide from enemies. There are a ton of frustrating parts that are challenging to get through, but I didn’t rage quit or give up.
The game looks gorgeous. The animation and art design looks great, and the details of the devastation on Gamearth are intricate and looks great. Again, this game is Mature rated, so the bloody deaths are very detailed. If may be hard to watch, especially since you play as a small child.
Rise & Shine is a very challenging action/platformer/shooter. The game is not impossible to play, yet there are several moments where you will yell out in frustration. The animations and graphics look great. If you are in need of a more challenging type of plateformer, then Rise & Shine is right up your alley. If you get frustrated easily by less than perfect aim mechanics, then you might want to look elsewhere.
Rise & Shine is available now on Windows and Xbox One for $14.99. Does a challenging side scrolling shooter sound interesting to you? Let us know in the comments!
