Zen Studios has been creating pinball games for quite some time.  Their tables are known to be innovative and fun, and feature such franchises like Walking Dead, South Park, and several games from Bethesda.  I had the opportunity to play a collection of tables featuring characters from the Marvel Universe in the Marvel Pinball Epic Collection Vol. 1, which is in stores now!

This Epic Collection features a variety of Marvel characters.  You will find Spider-Man, Venom, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Blade, Ant Man, and the Avengers all on one retail disc. Each table is beautifully designed to show a ton of elements that you can find in your favorite Marvel comics.  You can swing through the streets of New York City with Spider-Man.  You can shrink to gigantically tiny proportions with Ant-Man.  I loved seeing Blade and Venom in this collection.  They don’t get as much love as the characters that are seen in the Marvel movie universe, but they are on display here.

One of the best parts of this collection is the stories that can be told as you are playing.  There are fantastic animations and movement of pieces and characters that occur when you hit bonuses and gain access to different parts of the table.  Zen Studios added some great set pieces on each table and you can tell that they know the comics and what fans expect from each of these Marvel characters.

Not only do you have access to character tables, but you also have tables featuring fairly recent event series in the Marvel comics.  World War Hulk, Fear Itself, and Civil War tables are all featured in this collection.  The main characters are featured throughout the table and interact as you earn points.  I thought it was really cool to see a story played out on a pinball table.  One of the benefits of having pinball in a digital form is to see moving pieces and animations as you play.

The controls work really well in this collection.  There are no glitches or anything that might hamper the movement of the ball.  As we all know, hitting the ball in a certain place will give you access to all the top bonuses and areas.  Zen Studios did a fine job with controls and keeping things interesting throughout the game.

My only downside is not the fault of Zen Studios or anyone else.  I had a great time playing the collection.  And yet, it still doesn’t have the same feel of an actual pinball machine.  Like so many others, I have played countless pinball sessions on some classic machines.  Digital pinball just doesn’t have that same feel as an actual machine.  Kudos to Zen Studios for at least adding cool animations and having the table come to life throughout the game.  Without those pieces, digital pinball would be really boring.

If you are a pinball fan or enjoy Marvel superheroes and stories, then I would recommend the Epic Collection to you.  At $29.99, the collection has a great deal of replay value and offers many hours of entertainment.  It is one of those games that anyone can pick up an enjoy.
