Before leaving to Playstation Experience I had a list of every game that would be there. I went through and Googled each one, and The Church in the Darkness stayed in my mind. In short, The Church in the Darkness is a top-down Stealth infiltration game where every game you start is different. Isaac and Rebecca Walker lead the Collective Justice Mission, in short it is a cult based in the US in the 1970’s. They get labeled as radicals and start becoming persecuted so they decide to pack up their followers where they can be free, in the jungles of South America. You play Vic an ex-law enforcement officer who takes the trip to Freedom Town to check on your nephew Alex. It’s at this point where you start the game. Every playthough is completely different. Do you run in guns blazing? Kill only the guards? Don’t kill anyone? The choices are up to you…but it isn’t that easy. You learn more about the cult the deeper you investigate. Learning more about the Walkers and the actual cult’s beliefs from documents and items you find, talking to some of the cultists, and listening to the loud speakers. The amazing thing is…it changes every time. Maybe the cult is hostile maybe they are harmless. Maybe you need to just get your nephew out of this situation, maybe the world will be a better place if you killed the Walkers. The decisions you make you will have to live with the consequences.
I was completely blown away with this game. The details in characters and the story Richard and his team implemented was down right amazing. There really isn’t a game like this out today and I think that is what gives it that extra draw. I cant wait to get my hands on this game to dive deeper into this game and see how my bad decisions can probably turn and bite me in the ass. If this game is as awesome as it seems, The Church in the Darkness can very well give Richard and Paranoid Productions their own cult following.
