A very exciting announcement was just released via Microsoft’s website. It was announced that Sony and Microsoft are exploring a potential partnership involving cloud-based solutions for gaming and AI!
Before I continue, I want to emphasize that the press release uses the word “explore” quite a bit. As of right now, this partnership is a “memorandum of understanding signed by the parties.” Sony and Microsoft are exploring possibilities right now, and this story will develop over time. Now, let’s look at what they are exploring.
According to the article (that you can read here), the two companies will explore joint development of future cloud solutions in Microsoft Azure. This exploration will potentially support Sony and Microsoft gaming and content services. In addition, the two companies will explore the use of current Microsoft Azure datacenter-based solutions for Sony’s game and content-streaming services. By working together, the companies aim to deliver more enhanced entertainment experiences for their worldwide customers. All of this is to create better platforms for gamers, which is incredible.
The article has some quotes from Kenichiro Yoshida, president, and CEO of Sony, as well as Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, so I encourage you to read those. Again, this story is developing, and hopefully, both companies will announce more news in the near future.
I’m just excited to see what this could possibly bring to the industry. What will cloud based gaming look like on both platforms? How will it help gamers, developers, and content creators? I doubt this will be the end of the Sony/Microsoft rivalry, but it is really cool to see this partnership happen.
