Roll7 and Bad Land Games

If you’re looking for a completely addicting skateboard side-scroller, look no further! You may have heard of OlliOlli before, but this time roll7 and Bad Land Games packaged the original OlliOlli and the re-vamped OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood in one convenient bundle, along with tons of bonus content! It truly is a dream come true for anybody that loves a fun yet challenging game to get sucked right into.

I will admit that when I was handed the OlliOlli Epic Combo I had only vaguely heard of OlliOlli before. Now after playing I am truly saddened that I never played it before! OlliOlli is just flat out fun. It’s so different from most skateboarding games, which isn’t a bad thing at all. In fact, I almost feel like Tony Hawk lied to me because the hardest part about OlliOlli is often LANDING your tricks. It definitely feels like a more authentic game in that sense. And OlliOlli is so darn fast. You really have to think on your feet and trust your muscle memory to get the big combos. I love a game like this, it lets me truly zone out and let it take over my brain.

I really loved the overall aesthetic of both OlliOlli games. The first OlliOlli had a pixellated style that I actually loved very much. It had enough detail to paint a picture for the player, but just little enough that your brain could fill things in as you please. OlliOlli 2 was much more smooth and streamlined, and it made the whole game feel a little bit faster. It was quite beautiful. It was really hard for me to decide which look I liked better.  Adding to the minimalistic and/or pixellated look of the games was an awesome soundtrack. It was really mellow and it had an easy beat. It had enough substance to really add to the game, but it never got annoying. Fans of the band Washed Out will definitely enjoy the soundtrack. Luckily, those who buy the Epic Combo Edition will receive a soundtrack download code! Score!

The controls remain mostly the same between OlliOlli 1 and 2, which was really nice when I was switching between them. The biggest difference was the button to restart your run, but that’s not such a big deal. I am so glad that they kept the main controls consistent between each game though, because then I can be equally bad at the two games! Ha ha. I guess I’m not bad at OlliOlli, the game is just so delightfully challenging and different from any skateboarding game I’ve ever played. I do consider myself a connoisseur of skateboarding games, especially the Tony Hawk and Skate franchises. And OlliOlli definitely stands out. Timing is such an important part of OlliOlli, which can get difficult when you’ve been playing for too long. The analog stick is used to jump and pull tricks, and the X button (I played on a PS4 by the way) was for landing on the ground after tricking. Time and time again I found myself trying to jump with X, as I had been so deeply trained to do by almost every game ever. I got very frustrated with myself, but I didn’t want to stop playing! That’s just one of the many things I loved about OlliOlli. The game is something I had never played before, and the controls are so new to me too. Overall these games are a very welcome challenge, and I enjoyed every minute of them.

When it comes down to it, I would say that OlliOlli is worth your time and money. Coming in at $29.99, the Epic Combo Edition is awesome. It’s got the original OlliOlli, OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood, a booklet insert with extra inside info on the making of the game, 3 making-of documentaries, and the OlliOlli 2 soundtrack. And this is all on one game disc, which is extra awesome if you like to switch between the two games like I do. Each game has its own style, both of which are totally awesome. The soundtrack is great, and the games are challenging. I think the only complaint I have about this game is that there is not really a story mode. I don’t know how exactly a story would work with this game, but I am the type that loves a good story in my games. Even so, I still loved to play OlliOlli and I plan to go back to it quite often. I definitely understand how the game won over 75 game awards. Just trust me here; go play OlliOlli. Get the Epic Combo Edition and play OlliOlli.

OlliOlli can be found on most gaming platforms, including PC and all current Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles.
