Tonight has been dominated by sports news, so of course Nintendo decides to announce something right in the middle of the NFL Draft and NBA Playoffs!
Nintendo has officially announced a new handheld device – the 2DS XL. The new system will be black and turquoise and use the same large screen that is found on the 3DS XL system. This new device has the same clamshell as the 3DS and looks about the same. However, this system will only play games in 2D. The 2DS XL will have NFC support for amiibo cards and figures. It will be able to play all DS games in 2D.
In a press release, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO, said the following: “This new addition to Nintendo’s portable hardware line demonstrates our commitment to the hand-held market. New Nintendo 2DS XL sports a beautiful clamshell design and offers a great balance between price and performance.”
The system will be available on July 28th for suggested retail price of $149.99. The 2DS XL will launch on the same day as two big new games: Hey! PIKMIN and Miitopia.

I mean, the Switch is portable, so do you really need another handheld? Of course, this is a great option if you don’t have a Switch or if you are looking for something with more battery life than the Switch.
