NBA 2K20 MyCareer Review – PS4
NBA 2K20 is an amazing game for all levels of Basketball fandom and gamers. It’s fairly easy to pick up and play and you’ll need to put some time in like the pros to master it. While I dabbled around in all of the game modes, I spent most of my time in MyCareer.
NBA 2K20 MyCareer mode did not disappoint. You get to build your player from the ground up, from stats and how you want to play, to how you look, to even what you wear on and off the court! The whole MyCareer mode was much MUCH deeper than I originally expected. You could even scan your face in using the NBA 2K20 mobile app if you feel so inclined.
Without ruining the story, the game starts off in college, trying to make a March Madness run. Some drama happens and the story just takes off from there. You get calls from agents, you get to choose what sponsor deal you want to accept. They throw little questions at you here and there and depending on how you answer them you may gain skills, chemistry with your team, or boost your fans. It could also do the opposite, it can lower some of those areas as well. What was a real treat was the acting in MyCareer. You had NBA greats like Scotty Pippen and current amazing celebrities like Idris Elba. You won’t see all of the actors through one playthrough, depending on your decisions, you may need to play through again and change some decisions to check out all of the great actors lined up.
Now once you get drafted, MyCareer just blows up into a whole other game. You have a couple of options. You can continue playing with your drafted team and level your player up and make him better. You can jump right into My Neighborhood to play online with the character you created. Now most players, I think, jump right into My Neighborhood and start their online dominance.
I chose to jump into My Neighborhood and explore. It’s a friggin game within a game. There are courts to play on with live games with real gamers player, it’s amazing as you can just sit around and watch them if you’d like. They have stores to buy clothes and such from, there’s a building where you can spin the wheel for prizes, There are paths to take you to a different area that you can play on different courts with trampolines built into the game. There’s *deep Ace Ventura breath*, Disk Golf, dodgeball, Gatorade Training centers, a Pro-Am center, and the area changes with the seasons. For example, the leaves on the trees are turning orange and there are other Halloween decorations. It is so insane how much you can do and play and have it not be basketball. The My Neighborhood trailer showed off bikes and some crazy neighborhoods with Formula One racing around the border!
I will say this, there are a lot of players that put extra money into the game at this point to power level their characters. If you’re like me and just wanted to play it naturally, you may have some hard times finding teammates to play with. Maybe times I stood in line to play the next game and people would come up to me, see my level, then run off to another one. It was a little demoralizing when people would run off, I’d leave the sidelines then everyone would jump in. When it got to that point, I went into the MyCareer NBA season and played more games and that levels you up, in my experience quicker than in the Neighborhood.
As for communication as long as you aren’t in a party your voice chat is global when you are in a game for those playing. Also while you are in the Neighborhood you have a cell phone that you can form a squad, message people, and play trivia if it’s available. What’s slick is your character will pull the phone out in the game. It’s funny to see a bunch of people standing around the court with their phones out. Also, another cool feature is that if you want to listen to the in-game music your character will put headphones on, which is also visible to everyone in the area.
Overall the MyCareer and My Neighborhood is an amazing feature on an already feature-rich game. With all the addons and features that aren’t just basketball-related, there is almost no reason to buy another game if you are an NBA 2K20 fan, with the addition of the WNBA, I hope there will be an addition of female characters to My Neighborhood. That would be really fun to see!
