GameOctane Holiday Gift Guide 2017

by on November 22, 2017

This year has been a banner year for gaming.  Countless quality games and hardware have been released to rave reviews.  With the holiday season coming up, we wanted to throw together a guide that lists our recommendations for the gamer in your life.  Without further ado, here are our recommendations!

Nintendo Switch

One of the most innovative consoles as of recent with the option to play AAA titles literally anywhere. With a solid chunk of sweet Nintendo titles (Zelda and Mario) and a stash of awesome indie titles. This makes it an easy choice this holiday.

Xbox One X or Playstation Pro

We are living in an incredible age for consoles.  There are two great options for the hardcore console gamer in your life.  While these consoles vary in power and 4K capabilities, they will no doubt bring a lot of entertainment and joy.

NES or Super NES Classics

If you can find them, then grab them while you can!  These retro beauties are compact and bring all kinds of nostalgia.  Keep an eye on social media to find out when these consoles are in stock!

Single Player Games

Assassin’s Creed Origins

Explore Egypt in Ubisoft’s latest Assassin’s Creed installment. Uncovering dark secrets and watching the origin of Assassin’s Brotherhood is a treat. With the addition of some new RPG elements, it breathes some new live into the franchise.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

This is arguably the best first person shooter that has come out this year.  Quality storytelling and top notch game mechanics push Wolfenstein 2 into the Game of the Year conversations.

Horizon Zero Dawn

A Playstation 4 exclusive title, play as Aloy, a hunter and archer living in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by robots. Fun story, great visuals, and awesome voice acting, should have PS4 owners look towards Horizon Zero Dawn.

You play as an Irish samurai named William, in 1600’s Japan. It’s hack and slash combat with RPG elements thrown in. The combat, difficulty, and some great Japanese folklore makes this a great choice for mature gamers.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The newest Zelda game takes you throughout Hyrule in a new ruthless open world. Link wakes up after a 100 year slumber to a mysterious voice that begins to guide him to defeat Calamity Ganon. Using a new tool, the Sheikah Slate, Breath of the Wild adds some great new features to Link’s newest adventure.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

The latest Resident Evil game takes a greater emphasis over horror and exploration rather than action. This allows you to be more engrossed in the story. Scoring some major awards, this should be on horror fans must have.

Nier: Automata

Neir: Automata is an action-RPG where you take the role of combat androids working to clear out machine threats for local Resistance. Largely based around sci-fi, the story is awesome and touching on the idea that machines are beginning to feel emotions. Nier: Automata is getting major praise and looking at being game of the year for many gamers.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

A turn-based tactical RPG crossover between Mario and Ubisoft’s Rabbids, is a surprising hit. The gameplay, depth, graphics, and soundtrack makes this a must have for turn-based fans as well as Switch owners.

Call of Duty®: WWII_20171105005251

Call of Duty: World War II

As someone who grew weary of Call of Duty, I was blown away by World War II.  The Single Player campaign is top notch.  With the amazing multiplayer and zombie campaign, you and your friends will be busy for hours and hours this holiday season.

Destiny 2

We know how great the story campaign is, but there are a lot of things to do with your friends on Destiny 2.  Strikes, Raids, and the Crucible are all very fun to play with friends.  Destiny 2 will also have many future updates, so this is something that you and your friends can play for a long time.

Probably one of, if not THE hottest game of 2017 and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Take on 100 people in a battle arena where you need to loot, craft, use tactics, and bit of luck to become the last one standing!

Indie Games

An amazing rogue-like indie game with some great depth and time-slowing skills. Definitely check this out.

Last Day of June

This is one of our favorite games of the year.  Beautiful storytelling and art design from the team at Ovosonico.  It’s an emotional story about loss, so make sure to have tissues at hand!

This adventure/puzzle game is another favorite of ours.  The puzzles are fantastic and the art design is unique and beautiful.  You don’t want to miss out on this one!

Stardew Valley: Collector’s Edition

I know Stardew Valley has been out for quite some time, but I highly recommend buying it again on the Switch.  The gameplay is very addicting, so having it available on the go is a must!

What Remains of Edith Finch

Another heartbreaking, yet beautiful game.  As you play, you will come to experience the tragic tale of the Finch family.  One of the best interactive experiences of the year.

One of the most challenging, yet fun platformers to ever come out.  The art design and music are absolutely incredible.  One of the best games of the year!

Family Fun

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a must own.  This game is perfect for family activities.  If you haven’t played it before, then now is the time to pick it up!

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

This is a great value for fans of Crash Bandicoot.  All 3 games remastered in HD.  This is a great value for older and younger gamers.

Super Mario Odyssey

Mario is back!  Gamers of all ages can jump in and enjoy hours of amazing gameplay and fun.  This is another must own for the Switch.

Lego Marvel Superheroes 2

This is one of the best Lego games out.  Hours of content packed into this game.  If the story and puzzles don’t keep you entertained, then spend time making your own character in the revamped Character Creation!

Everybody’s Golf

If you haven’t played a golf game in a while, then now is your chance!  Great gameplay and lots of fun for the entire family.

Time cards/console market cards

Ask for these and get what you want. Why pay $50 a year when someone else can for you? Pro-tip: These can go on sale during the holidays! Free money!!

Lego NASA Apollo Saturn V Rocket

This thing is bad ass! 1969 pieces, 1:110th scale and comes with its own stand, and epic detail. This would look amazing on any shelf.

Xbox Design Lab

Now is a great time to design your very own Xbox controller!  Through Black Friday, the Design Lab is $15 off and free shipping.
