Flashback Friday Spotlight: Top 10 Super Nintendo Games

by on August 26, 2016

Happy Anniversary, Super Nintendo!  This week marked the 25th anniversary of the North American release of the beloved console.  We have some great memories of the Super Nintendo, and spent many, many hours on the console as we grew up.  The games were incredible!!

In honor of the 25th anniversary, I put together a list of my Top 10 Super Nintendo games.  This might be the toughest list I have ever created because of the amount of time I spent on the SNES.  Read on to find out who made the number 1 spot!!

Honorable Mentions:  Super Metroid, Captain America and the Avengers, Jeopardy: Deluxe Edition, Clayfighter, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat, Final Fight, NHL ’94, Shaq Fu (ADMIT IT, YOU LOVED IT TOO), Star Fox, Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting

10. NBA Jam

Man, this trailer is intense.  But so is the game!  This was 2 on 2 basketball on steroids.  There isn’t a more iconic phrase than “HE’S ON FIRE!!!”  NBA Jam was intense and fun, which is exactly what a basketball game needs to be.

9. Earthworm Jim

Earthworm Jim – one of the funniest platformers ever.  The game is filled with action, humor, and great music.  I had to include a clip of my favorite level to show of just how great this game is.

8. F-Zero

One of my favorite racing games on the SNES.  I would fight with family about who gets to pick Captain Falcon.  I didn’t win a lot, but I had a blast every time I played.

7. Disney’s Aladdin

I know, I know – what is a Disney game doing on this list?  But you have to admit, out of all the Disney games, this one was entertaining, challenging, and a lot of fun.

6. Mario Kart

Mario Kart had to be on this list.  Arguably one of the best racing games of all time, Mario Kart combined our favorite Nintendo games with memorable tracks and power-ups.  I can’t remember how many times a shell kept me from winning the race.  But it was worth it!

5. Donkey Kong Country

At the time, Donkey Kong Country was a beautiful 3D game.  I was blown away by the graphics when it came out!  Luckily, it also included amazing gameplay.  Definitely a classic in the SNES lineup of games.

4. Super Star Wars

I don’t know about you, but this game was really difficult.  But I still loved it.  Great action and awesome music.  Definitely a fun side-scrolling action game!

3. Chrono Trigger

When Chrono Trigger came out, my mom bought it…and wouldn’t let me play.  And that memory is still with me to this day.  When I did get the chance to play, I couldn’t put it down.  This was my first real RPG and one of my favorites.  The story and gameplay were phenominal.

2. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

This was a tough decision.  Link to the Past is one of my favorite games of all time.  I spent the most time on this game than any other SNES game.  The story, gameplay, bosses….I could go on and on.  This game had everything I ever asked for in a Zelda title.

1. Super Mario World

It was a tough call (and I changed the order in this list about 20 times), but I ended up putting one of the best Mario games ever at number 1.  It played so well, and the secrets were so much fun to find (Star Road for the win).  Super Mario World deserves to be in the top spot.

Thank you, SNES, for the amazing memories!
