E3 2019 was filled with some discussion concerning a certain Avengers game that disappointed some fans. While I enjoyed what I say (which you can read about here), others were greatly disappointed by the upcoming game from Square Enix. In a way, the complaints overshadowed the fact that we have another Avenger’s game coming out in July that is a continuation of a fantastic co-op series. Of course, I’m talking about Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order.
The previous installments of Ultimate Alliance featured a team of superheroes battling the forces of evil in a co-op action game. You can choose from a massive list of characters, with each of the characters having unique moves and powers. Ultimate Alliance 3 has the same feel as it’s predecessors but has some added features to make the action even more robust.
In the demo, which lasted roughly 15 minutes, we took a team of 4 heroes against the Hand. At first, we started with Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, and Star-Lord. However, we had a list of roughly 10-12 heroes that we could choose from, including Groot and Rocket Raccoon, Miles Morales, Black Panther, and Deadpool. The demo started on some New York City rooftops. There, we spoke with Jessica Jones, one of the many characters that may or may not be playable when the game launches. She sent us on a mission to the Shadowland Temple to investigate bad stuff going on.
Using a top-down perspective, you fight your way through each level using basic and special attacks. Each hero has a unique move set and movement based on their powers. Wolverine, for example, runs through the level and uses various slashes to take out enemies. Miles Morales swings through the level and uses his fists and web shooters to do damage.
One of my favorite aspects, however, is the addition of 2-4 player power combos. These combos allow you to team up with one or more players in do an extremely powerful combo move. The 2 players combos are cool, but the real show comes when you get all 4 players to team up for a move. Depending on your combinations, you combine aerial and ground attacks to wipe out enemies. It feels like an ultimate comic team up come to life.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait a long time to play more of Ultimate Alliance 3. 15 minutes was not nearly enough time, and I had such a blast playing as the different characters. It feels like the previous installments, but with enough upgrades to work really well on the Nintendo Switch. I know I’m buying Ultimate Alliance 3 right when it comes out on July 19th. Let us know if you are planning on picking it up next month!
