Favorite Moments from The Game Awards 2018

by on December 7, 2018

Last night’s Game Awards were arguably the best so far in its short history.  It was a wonderful celebration of gaming in 2018 and had a variety of games to look forward to in 2019.  Sure, it wasn’t a perfect show, but it brought a ton of excitement and celebration.  Here are some of my favorite moments from the show –

The Big Three Open the Show

I love how the show opened with Phil Spencer, Shawn Layden, and Reggie Fils-Aime.  Nothing groundbreaking occurred while they opened the show (can you imagine if they announced crossplay for every game???), it was a solid show of unity and reminded us that gaming is important, not the platform that you choose to play.

Surprise Premieres

It’s annoying when games leak before the start of a big show (with Ubisoft having the worst luck with leaks).  Despite the rumors, it was nice seeing some nice surprises.  Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance 3 being a Switch exclusive was a huge surprise for me.  Mortal Kombat 11 was another surprise I was not expecting.  Overall, there were some solid premieres, both AAA and indie.

Epic Games Store Coming for Steam

Right now, the Epic Games Store is a little bare bone.  But if Game Awards are any indication, then the store will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future.  The announcement of Hades exclusive to the store is a step in the right direction.  And with free games every two weeks and a very generous percentage for developers, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a legitimate competitor to Steam.

Joker is Coming to Super Smash Ultimate

No, we are not talking about Batman’s number one villain.  Joker, from Persona 5, will be the first fighter in the game’s DLC.  The interesting thing about this announcement is that hints at the direction of the rest of the DLC.  If anything, it indicates that there are plenty of surprises in store for the rest of the DLC fighters.

We want Outer Worlds Immediately

I WANT OUTER WORLDS IN MY VEINS RIGHT THIS SECOND.  SCREW THIS 2019 CRAP I WANT THE GAME NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW.

In all seriousness, this looks incredible.  If it is Fallout New Vegas but in space, then it will be a ginormous hit.

God of War Wins Game of the Year!

God of War is my personal Game of the Year, but I didn’t think it would actually win against the juggernaut that is Red Dead Redemption 2.  It was a fantastic moment and a well-deserved win for the Santa Monica team.
