I have been hearing some rumblings from management at smaller video game stores that Rockstar is not producing as many copies of Red Dead Redemption 2 as expected. Small distributors will not be receiving copies until October 30th, leaving anxious customers that placed pre-orders with smaller stores potentially without copies of this highly anticipated game come release day.
One can only speculate as to the reason for this. Is Rockstar attempting to push digital sales? Are they looking to boast that they have sold out all inventory on day one? It is not clear and hopefully some answers are ascertained in the near future.
More details will be provided as they come up, the sources for this story wished to remain anonymous at this time as they continue to work with Rockstar and their distributors.
[UPDATE: October 18th]
“R* hasn’t approved any distributor to receive any RDR 2 (standard and SE) in their warehouse for launch. They are only drop shipping directly to their direct retail partners and select indirect retail accounts on behalf of the indirect retailers’ respective distributor. The “select indirect retailers” are required to present their marketing plan for launch in order to get authorized for launch allocation. R* is making these select retailers invest in a more robust plan than the usual new release game.”
