New Zelda Title Delayed – But It’s Not All Bad

It’s Twilight Princess all over again.

If you’re a fan of the Legend of Zelda series, and you don’t live under a rock, you’ve probably heard by now that the latest Legend of Zelda game has been delayed to 2017.

We’ve been taken on a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster with this upcoming Zelda title for the WiiU. Once upon a time it was coming out in 2015, then it got pushed way to 2017, and then we were told 2016 for the 30th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda. And now, the current word is 2017 yet again – but this time they are bringing a new offer to the table.

The now-2017 release of the new Zelda title for WiiU may have been disappointing to many fans who were anxiously awaiting the new game this year. I am trying to be okay with it, because there was more news with the new release date: The release of Nintendo’s new console, the NX. Come March 2017, we can now expect the new NX console, as well as WiiU and NX versions of the new Zelda title.

After hearing the news I was feeling a sense of deja vu. If you feel like this is a little familiar, that’s because it happened long ago, in the days of the GameCube. Twilight Princess was also long-delayed, and received a double release with the GameCube and the then-new Wii console. For me, the choice of which Twilight Princess to buy was clear: the Wii version looked like a lot of fun, since I was fully sold on the swinging controller gimmick. The problem this time around is, we know essentially nothing about the NX console. There are plenty of ideas and rumors based upon various patents that Nintendo has filed for controller designs, but Nintendo has not given us an ounce of information about the NX. Nor do they plan to anytime soon, it would seem.

Every month or so, Nintendo broadcasts a slew of announcements via Nintendo Direct. Nintendo fans across the country count down the hours for the presentation to start, and Nintendo usually does a great job of living up to the expectations of their fans, delivering exciting news and fun DLC.  But since Nintendo announced a new console in the works, they have made it very clear that they are not ready to talk about it yet. On the webpage for Nintendo Direct, Nintendo posts a message hours before it begins: NX will not be a topic of discussion. And they seem adamant to keep it that way. E3 is coming up next month, and Nintendo has made it very clear that their only focus will be on the new Zelda game.

This is what confuses me. Why announce a date for a console release, and not present the console at E3? I’m hoping that they give us more information than we are expecting. I think about this often; will there be elements of gameplay in the new Zelda game that are all-new thanks to some kind of feature on an NX controller? Will they give us any information on the differences between the WiiU and NX versions of the game? There’s got to be something they’re going to give us. Because it just doesn’t make sense to not demo your console at E3.

I’m trying to have faith that Nintendo knows what they’re doing with the NX. In the end I’m just confused, and hoping that E3 will bring some answers. All I can do is sit back and wait for information, so I can decide whether to switch out my Zelda for WiiU pre-order for an NX pre-order. Only time will tell!

What do you think? Are you sticking with your WiiU for this game? Upgrading to the NX? Let us know in the comments below!
