Today Telltale Games (Sam and Max season one and two) released their second adventure featuring Guybrush Threepwood, his lovely wife Elaine, and the seemingly new and improved LeChuck. Episode two "The Siege of Spinner Cay" starts Guybrush right where we left him...in peril as always. Get ready to do some out of the box thinking...your going to need it.
First off, being a huge fan of the "Tales of Monkey Island" makes it a bit easier for me to review and say I love the hell out of this game. With that said I will try to pick at it more and not release my internal love for the series from this point out. :) For those of you that did complete the first game, (which I hope a lot of you have) you were left with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of the episode. Without giving too much away, Guybrush Threepwood "Mighty Pirate" continues his quest to find the Pox of LeChuck curing “El Spongo Grande”. All of the main characters (Guybrush, Elaine, LeChuck) are back along with a new side character Morgan La Flay. Morgan being an attractive pirate hunter after Threepwood, which just so happens to be Threepwood's biggest fan. (Love triangle anyone?) In "The Siege of Spinner Cay" both Elaine and newly changed LeChuck assist you with puzzles. Which worked out very well, but the puzzles this time around were a lot tougher than any Telltale game before I believe. Granted they were all solvable, but the adventure of "The Siege of Spinner Cay" does not stay on one island. You do a lot of "island hopping" this time around the world Tales of Monkey Island. There are 3 islands in the main section of the game where most of the action will take place, and three smaller islands around the map you need to explore as well. What I liked is that every island was a new place to check out, Flotsam island and Gelatto rock are on the map, but are unable to make the trip to (not going to explain due to spoilers). The characters of "The Siege of Spinner Cay" were all very smooth and colorful as in the last game, but it seems that some character models were reused. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, it just felt one of the pirates looked to be almost exactly as the printer in the first episode. The characters do work very well with each other, especially your wife Elaine seems to have forgave LeChuck for the past and seems to stick up for him quite a bit this time around.
The game plays exactly the same as the first episode. Utilizing either your "WASD" keys or your mouse to control the movement of Guybrush. I used the mouse quite often this time around, but some places were a little tight and the use of the keyboard was almost necessary, but nothing to harp about. As stated earlier the puzzles this time around seemed to be beefed up a bit. My roommate watched the final parts of the game while I was playing (more like stuck). We kept trying different ways to solve a puzzle, which just so happened to have to be reset every time you failed. There were a time when I got so frustrated with a puzzle I would have to leave the room for a second, then come back in to try to finish it. At one part we were about at wits end when something hit me! I annouced to my roommate "I have a crazy idea!" My roommate has never heard of any of the Tales of Monkey Island games but his response was priceless, "The way this game has been going, it will probably work..." And it did. The Siege of Spinner Cay is well worth playing for fans of the first episode "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal". It does not disappoint from the cliffhanger from the first episode, and leave you hanging with another! Telltale Games is doing an excellent job of balancing the characters, the puzzles and humor we have grown to love into an experience that will continue through-out the next 3 months. Both episode one and two are available either through Telltale Games or you can also download it through Steam. |
