ICYMI: Nintendo Direct 9.1.2016 Brings TONS of News for Nintendo 3DS

by on September 1, 2016

Alright folks, after a long summer drought we are finally being drenched with some good Nintendo News! Nintendo broadcasted a new Direct presentation early this morning, and we took notes for you! Spoiler alert, no news about the NX console; Nintendo stuck to their word and kept this presentation centered on the 3DS. Here’s a summary of all the news from today’s Nintendo Direct presentation!!

Pokemon Sun & Pokemon Moon: We’ve been teased before about Sun and Moon, and now we have just a little more information. Players will find a Dark Rattata in their game. Supposedly the Rattata needed to become nocturnal in order to survive in certain areas! How fun. We also learned about Z crystals. It seems that some of them will be pokemon-specific, and some will apply to many pokemon. These will boost a pokemon’s power and allow them to work with their trainer to unleash an ultimate attack!

My favorite part of the Pokemon news today was Munchlax. Players can download Munchlax starting from the game’s launch on November 18th until January 11th, 2017.

Super Mario Maker 3DS: That’s right, Nintendo is continuing their trend of bringing awesome WiiU games to the 3DS system! The 3DS version of Super Mario Maker will have essentially all the functionality of the WiiU version. It will come with 100 courses made by Nintendo, along with medal objective challenges in each of those courses. Players will be able to go online and play courses that were made in the WiiU version, although not every course will be compatible with the 3DS. Local sharing of courses on the 3DS version will allow players to collaborate between each of their own systems though, which sounds awesome! Super Mario Maker 3DS will be available December 2, 2016.

Mario Party Star Rush:  Okay so this game looks like a lot more fun than the last Mario Party game. Everybody is a different color Toad and there are no turns… everybody rolls and moves at the same time! The first one to reach the boss at the end of the board gets the battle started. Players can pick up the traditional Mario characters as they go, to fight alongside them! There are 7 play modes and TONS of mini games! Believe it or not there are also going to be 7 new amiibo figures, and all the other Mario amiibo will also be compatible with this game.

The best part about this: Players without the game can download the FREE Party Guest app onto their 3DS and play the game with full functionality in a local multiplayer with only one game cartridge! Mario Party Star Rush will launch November 4, 2016.

Animal Crossing New Leaf: Our beloved New Leaf is getting a huge update!! It will bring amiibo functionality and a few other features, including new villagers. Many of the features were not disclosed to us at this time, but there will be an Animal Crossing Mini-Direct this fall to tell us the rest of the details. For now we know that once we updated the game, we can use all the existing Animal Crossing amiibo and amiibo cards, and some select amiibo from other games (though we don’t know which ones yet). The update can be downloaded for FREE on the e-shop later this year. For those who do not have the game yet, you have options! You can download it from the e-shop, you can buy the Nintendo Selects edition, OR you can wait until the Holiday season and purchase the “welcome amiibo” edition which will come with a new Animal Crossing amiibo card.

StreetPass Mii Plaza: This app has always had good potential, and now it’s getting an awesome update! The update should allow the game to run faster and smoother, and there is a “Quick Plaza” that will make everything move much faster and will shorten the messages from each of your Plaza visitors. Awesome!! There will also be a “Mii Plaza Premium” (for an additional cost) that will allow 100 visitors at your gate, instead of the measly 10 visitors we have now. There will also be some new StreetPass games, which actually look like a lot of fun. Starting today, you can download either the “Slot Car Rivals” or “Market Crashers” game for free! If you do this, you can also purchase the other 4 games in a discounted bundle. The StreetPass Mii Plaza update and Premium version are available NOW on the Nintendo 3DS e-shop.

Tank Troopers: Tank Troopers is a brand new game, exclusive to the 3DS e-shop. It’s a tank battle game featuring many different troopers, each with unique powers to change your tank’s abilities. There is a single player, Download Play,  or a local multiplayer for up to 6 people. Tank Troopers will launch this winter in the 3DS e-shop.

Picross 3D Round 2: Picross 3D Round 2 is an e-shop exclusive launching today. Players will have 300+ puzzles, and 2 colors to paint blocks with. You can now tap amiibo for secret character puzzles! A demo will be available for this game too!

#Nindies: Nintendo has been teaming up with lots of indie developers. Every Thursday, starting TODAY, you can download an indie game at a reduced price. Today’s game is called Axiom Verge, check it out!

And now for the best part of the presentation…..

ZELDA FUN TIME WITH REGGIE!!!!!!!

This year is the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Legend of Zelda game, and Nintendo is finally doing something about it!

The NES Classic Edition releasing later this year will have the original Legend of Zelda game on it, but we already knew that. Reggie just wanted to remind us.

There will be some new Zelda amiibo coming DECEMBER 2: 8-bit Link, Link from Ocarina of Time, and a 2-pack featuring Toon Link and Toon Zelda from Wind Waker. The best part is that these new amiibo will have special functionality in Breath of the Wild.

Dark Horse Comics have teamed up with Nintendo again (bless their souls for doing so) to bring us The Legend Of Zelda Art and Artifacts. It’s a book similar to Hyrule Historia, with 2,000+ illustrations from each of the Zelda games. It’s available for pre-order now on Amazon (yes I already have a copy pre-ordered), and Amazon has a release date set to February 21, 2017.

Lord Reggie reminds us to check out the Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses, on tour now in North America! I also second that notion, I have seen the Symphony and it is glorious. Go ahead and ask me if I have tickets to this year’s tour. Spoiler alert: Yes.

The original version of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be available in the WiiU e-shop TODAY. This is not a drill! I was hoping for an HD release but the original will do as well!!

And finally, the 3rd DLC pack for Hyrule Warriors Legends will be available TODAY! This DLC features Toon Link and Toon Zelda from Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Toon Link has a sand wand and the Spirit Train, and Toon Zelda turns into a Phantom Knight of course! It looks like a TON of fun. There is also a new Adventure Mode map! And as an added bonus, the DLC season pass is on sale!

Okay the Zelda fun time is over, but there is still so much news!  NEW GAME RELEASE LIGHTNING ROUND!!!

Ace Attourney Spirit of Justice: e-shop exclusive launch September 8

Dragon Quest IIX launches 2017 (vague, I know)

Yo-Kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Yo-Kai Watch 2: Fleshy Souls demo available Mid-September (full release date unknown)

Disney Magical World 2 launches October 14 with free Frozen outfits with preorder!

Sonic Boom Fire and Ice will be out September 27

Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse launches September 20

Yoshi’s Wooly World for 3DS will launch February 3, 2017. It has all the levels from the WiiU version, along with “poochies” who will help you out and they’re SUPER CUTE.

Mario Sports Superstars will feature 5 sports from other Mario sports games all in one, and will launch Spring 2017

And finally….

We are getting a new Pikmin side-scroller on the 3DS in 2017! It looks like lots of fun!

Okay there you have it! So much Nintendo news all at once! That was an awesome Nintendo Direct, and I’m looking forward to the Animal Crossing Direct later this fall!
