First Impressions – A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Plague Tale, from Asobo Studios and Focus Home Interactive, is a very interesting game.  I had the opportunity to see it at E3.  The demo we saw was more of a representation of what they want to have in the regular game.  The area may not appear in the game, but the purpose of the game was represented in the demo.

Developed on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, A Plague Tale: Innocence will feature gameplay that blends action, adventure and stealth phases.  You play Amicia and, along with her little brother Hugo, are on the run from the terrifying Inquisition.  Our young heroes will also need to survive against an even greater danger: supernatural swarms of rats that appeared with the plague that infecting countless cities in Middle Age France (in the 1300’s).

I wouldn’t say there is combat in the game, but there are times where you have to be cunning when facing soldiers of the Inquisition and the rats.  In the demo, Amicia had to rescue Hugo from two soldiers, who were surrounded by rats.  The key to dealing with rats is the light.  If you have a torch or other source of light, then they will stay away from you.  In this situation, Amicia used a sling to break the lanterns that the soldiers were holding.  When that happened, the rats took the soldiers out.  It really is a little terrifying to see a swarm of rats envelop someone and kill them.

After you get your brother out, you go into a church.  There are some puzzle aspects in this part because you have to get to a certain area, but must find light so you don’t get killed by the rats.  The demo ended when we got a light and went into the catacombs of the church.  We saw a glimpse of how Hugo works in this game.  He is very small (about 5 or 6 years old) and can fit in small spaces to get supplies for you.  There may be a little crafting involved with the resources that Hugo finds.

I must say that I am intrigued by this game.  It is still in early development, and the footage we saw maybe tweaked or changed significantly before the game comes out.  There is no release date as of right now, but I definitely want to see more.  It’s a cool premise and the rats definitely add a creepy factor to the game.  We’ll bring you more info as it becomes available.  But let us know what you think about the game in the comments below!
