PlayStation 3 – The End Is Near

by on March 18, 2017

Step back with us for a moment in the GameOctane time machine back to the date of November 11th, 2006. On that day Sony released the next step in next generation gaming with the PlayStation 3 unit. A rough estimate of 83 million units have been sold since that day. Updated on the Official Sony PlayStation page in Japan, there is mention of a “Scheduled completion coming soon”. This sounds like that Sony may be ending its 11 year run with the console. Also mentioned on an important notice from SIEJA that after purchase support for the console will end in Japan at the end of this month on March 31st, 2017 for the 2500 series console. According to the notice “Regarding the CECH-2500 series (160 GB / 320 GB model) of PlayStation┬« 3, after-sales service will be terminated on Friday, March 31, 2017 due to depletion of parts inventory”. They are giving folks this deadline to submit their consoles for support/repair, but after that they will be getting no further help from Sony.

The consoles mentioned that are effected with this end of support, are listed below as obtained from the important notice (translated to english with Google Translate) on the SIEJA Website.

What does this mean exactly for the United States consoles?
