New Year’s Resolution: No More Backlog!

by on January 5, 2017

It’s a brand new year, and with it comes the desire to change or try new things.  Of course, the popular way to address this is with a New Year’s Resolution.  We all know the challenges of actually completing a resolution, but it is still a good opportunity to address something that is bothering you and try to change it.  For me, my resolution this year is to get rid of my gaming backlog.

In case there are some of you that don’t have to deal with this issue – a backlog is your collection of games that have gone unplayed or have not been finished.  It can be both annoying and a sense of accomplishment.  While I like telling friends “oh yeah, of course I got that game,” I hate following it up with “well……I haven’t started it yet” or “I haven’t finished it.”  That’s pretty embarrassing, especially if you write for a gaming website!!!

There are many excuses that I come up with when I talk about my backlog.  I lost track of how many times I told my wife “I need this game to review for GameOctane!!!”  Games releasing within weeks of each other doesn’t give you much of a chance to finish a game before being tempted to start another (a recent example being the close release dates of Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2).  And, of course, Xbox, PSN, and Steam sales do NOT help with trying to reduce the gaming backlog.  But no matter what type of excuse you have, there is still hope!

Gamers, I challenge you to take a hard look at your backlog and make the decision to finish those games!  I currently have about 60 games in my backlog, and I know there are gamers with way more than that.  Time may not be on your side, but I bet you can get through your backlog if you start a game and finish it before moving on to the next one.  It’s not easy, but we can do this!

As a part of my resolution, I am picking 20 games from my backlog.  As I complete them, I will write up a quick Backlog Review on GameOctane with some thoughts and reactions to the game.  Here is my list of 20 games, campaigns, and/or DLC that I want to start, complete, or replay –

Dead Rising 4, Virginia, Mafia III (I want a new ending lol), Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, Battlefield 1 (Single Player Campaign), Titanfall 2 (Single Player Campaign), Destiny: Rise of Iron, Fallout 4 DLC, Happy Dungeons, Lego Star Wars: Force Awakens, Overcooked (w/ 4 players), Skyrim HD, Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, Far Cry 4, Sunset Overdrive, Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, We Happy Few, The Witness, Ori and the Blind Forest

Is 20 too ambitious?  Probably!  But I will get through these games before the end of the year!

Keep checking to GameOctane to see my Backlog Reviews and let me know what you think!  If you have a gaming resolution, let us know in the comments below!
