In honor of the release and massive worldwide appeal of Pokemon GO, I wanted to take a moment to look back at the first Pokemon game for the N64 – Pokemon Snap!
Watch the commercial for a rare Blockbuster cameo!!
Pokemon Snap was unique for several reasons. First, it was the first 3-D Pokemon game to come out. At the time of release in 1999, the N64 graphics were top notch and the Pokemon looked amazing. Of course, anything would look better than the Game Boy graphics. But the models, movement, and colorful island were very visually appealing. Second, the game was unique because of the gameplay. You play a photographer who is asked by Professor Oak to take perfect pictures of 63 Pokemon on Pokemon Island. My younger self thought this concept was silly. But I was wrong. Throughout the game, you needed to be patient and use special items to bring out Pokemon and take the perfect picture. You didn’t battle anyone or take over gyms like in previous games.
Leave it to Nintendo to make a really fun and engaging game out of taking pictures. But is it really that surprising? I think you can argue that combat in Pokemon is not the important factor to consider. Take Pokemon GO, which only has combat in gyms. There are millions of players out there who may not get a chance to take over a gym. So what brings them coming back to the game? It is our desire to catch them all. Pokemon Snap offered the chance to catch Pokemon in a challenging new way.
No matter your age, Pokemon is loved by men and women of all ages. If you need a break from Pokemon GO, I encourage you to download Pokemon Snap on the Wii Virtual Console. It’s only $10! You won’t regret it.
